What have I gotten myself into? The pontoon in the daylight.

The Idea Hatches

It all started in Eastern Oregon, La Grande that is, actually to be more specific Spence Reservoir. A beautiful body of water at the top of the ridge La Grande sits on. The water was cold, it was a place for thought. And that thought was 'What if there was an iceberg floating in the lake? That would make perfect sense.' Well, four years later and a quite different body of water, The Gulf of Mexico and Sarasota Bay have reignited the idea. Now this is where it would be perfect. A place where people from all around the world come to visit, absorbing the sun and frolicking in the water. This is the place for the iceberg, an ironic view, reminding the every viewer that this can change and is changing. The 'Iceberg Flotilla' was born.

'Iceberg Flotilla' is a sculptural project, a global climate awareness vehicle, an educational presentation and a reminder of the use of irony and laughter in our everyday lives. I received a bit of seed money from New College of Florida's, where I teach sculpture,'Our Southwest Florida Coastal Watersheds; A Collaborative Integration of Research, Education, and Policy Outreach' to create a project that addresses Global Climate. That will be displayed in art exhibitions, educational outreach at places like Gwiz science museum as a way of bring awareness to rising sea levels and the affects they will have on our lives.

So, I will start with purchasing a junk/used pontoon boat. By purchasing a used boat I will be given a number of advantages than if I created the entire sculpture form raw materials. First and very importantly is the fact that I will then easily be able to get a title and therefore be able to register the vessel without much scrutiny as to its peculiar appearance allowing me to put it in the water. The second major advantage is this will allow me to focus on creating the exterior form to resemble that of an iceberg. I will create an exterior shell resembling the surface of an iceberg by laminating, shaping and carving foam. Then I will use paint, fiberglass clothe and resin to coat the surface making it water safe and to capture the glistening, shimmering surface of frozen ice slowly melting in the sun.

That is the start.
